Quality

Is Akal Farms organic?

We do not hold organic certification. What we can tell you precisely is how we grow. Government horticulture officers who inspected the farm recorded in writing that it was developed using organic farming techniques. In practice that means roughly 30 kg of cow dung per tree per year from our own dairy, vermicompost, a bio-gas unit, and chemical inputs kept to a minimum — with one four-acre mango block maintained entirely chemical-free.

Do you use carbide to ripen fruit?

No. Never. Fruit is picked when the tree has finished it, and nothing is artificially ripened or coloured.

How can I tell your mangoes are not carbide-ripened?

Carbide-ripened fruit colours evenly and fast but stays hard and tastes flat. Tree-ripened fruit colours unevenly, gives slightly to the thumb, and smells sweet at the stem. Buy once and you will know.

What fertiliser do you use?

Primarily our own cow dung, around 30 kg per tree annually, plus vermicompost, delivered through drip fertigation. Chemical inputs are used sparingly and only where the crop requires them.

Why do you keep a dairy on a fruit farm?

For manure, not milk. The dairy exists to supply cow dung to the trees.

Is your fruit sprayed with pesticide?

Kept to the minimum the crop will tolerate. Our four-acre chemical-free mango block uses none at all.

Are you FSSAI registered?

Yes. Our FSSAI licence number is 22426166000069.

Are you certified organic?

No, and we do not claim to be. See our full answer on how we actually grow.

Where does your water come from?

Borewells, stored in a revived farm well, plus rainwater harvesting structures. It reaches the trees through drip lines, with raingun and sprinkler where broader coverage is needed. Solar panels run the pumps.

How do you grow fruit in one of Tamil Nadu's driest districts?

By solving water before planting anything. Three years went into clearing, levelling, drilling borewells, reviving a storage well and laying drip lines. The drip layout was designed first and planting positions marked to match. Only then did saplings go in.

Farming

Can I learn your farming techniques?

Yes, at no charge. We will walk you through water storage, drip layout, crop selection, spacing and inter-cropping, and answer whatever you want to ask. Farmer groups have travelled here from across the region.

Do you train other farmers?

Informally and free. The Deputy Director of Horticulture recorded that local farmers convinced by these techniques have adopted them and are earning good profits.

What crops work on dry land in Ramanathapuram?

On our soil, mango, amla, guava, coconut, sapota and acid lime have all performed under drip. Amla and ber are the most drought-hardy. Come and see the plantings before you commit your own land.

What government subsidies are available for drip irrigation?

The Departments of Agriculture, Horticulture and Agricultural Engineering run subsidy schemes covering drip irrigation, raingun, sprinkler, solar pumpsets, sprayers and power tillers. We have used them and are happy to explain the application process. Confirm current terms with your local horticulture office.

How much water does the farm use?

Every drop is drip-delivered rather than flooded, so consumption is a fraction of conventional irrigation. Water comes from borewells and rainwater harvesting, buffered through a storage well, with solar-powered pumps.
